Weekend training on the River Prover and River Dane (6–7 December) provided the Under 18 England River, Bank Fly Fishing Team with one of the most challenging but valuable sessions of the season so far. Persistent rain and rising water levels tested both technical ability and mindset, offering important lessons in fishing difficult winter conditions.
Saturday on the River Prover proved extremely tough. Heavy rainfall had pushed the river into a semi-flood state, with strong flow, overgrown undergrowth and numerous trees along the banks making access and presentation particularly difficult.
With limited opportunity for traditional upstream approaches, ping casting became the main tactic throughout the day. The team worked hard to find manageable water, adjusting depth, weight and drift to cope with the conditions.
Grayling were the target quarry, and although most of the team unfortunately blanked, a couple of fish were landed, which were very welcome under such conditions and helped lift morale. These captures demonstrated that perseverance and accurate presentation can still pay off, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Sunday saw the team move to the River Dane, which again delivered very demanding conditions. Ongoing rainfall meant the river was running high and coloured, requiring careful water reading and safe positioning throughout the session.
Despite the floodwater, the team showed clear progression from the previous day. Better water choice and improved approach resulted in some grayling being caught, a solid achievement given the state of the river and a credit to the anglers’ determination.

A big thank you to Mark and Hana, and to Alex’s mum and dad, for kindly putting the team up on Saturday night and keeping everyone fed and looked after. Their support played a key role in making the weekend possible.
Although the fishing conditions were far from ideal, the weekend delivered something just as important as fish: team bonding. Sharing tough sessions, learning together and supporting one another both on and off the river strengthened the group and reinforced the values of Under 18 England River, Bank Fly Fishing Team.

This weekend training session on the River Prover and River Dane was a reminder that development does not always come from easy days and big catches. Fishing in flood conditions builds resilience, problem-solving skills and confidence – all essential qualities for young river anglers.
Despite the weather, the team left the weekend more experienced, more united and better prepared for future challenges.
